SLIP FROM FLOATING MATTRESS.

PALMERSTON NORTH, this day

Slipping from an inflated mattress, Mr. Harold Hayden, who was unable to swim, was drowned yesterday at Waitarero Beach, where he and hi*-* wife and family had gone to spend the day. A surf line was run out and Mr. Hayden was brought to the l>each. but although resuscitation methods were applied for an hour, he failed to rally. A son of Mr. H. Hayden, of Feilding, who is at present seriously ill in the Palmerston North Hospital," Mr. Harold Hayden had been employed for the past lfi years by the New Zealand Farmers' Distributing Company at Marton and Pahiatua, and latterly as head storeman iu charge of the hardware and produce department at Feilding. He had a lengthy period of war service and was a popular member o& the Feilding community. He is survived by his. wife and six young children.

PLAYING BESIDE STREAM.

TAUPO, this day,

A Maori child. Te Pukai Kura Moke, aged two years and eight months, daughter of Moke Horowai, of Wi*stahanui, was drowned in the Waitahanui Stream, about eight miles from Taupo, on Saturday.

She was playing on the bank of the stream, where her grandmother, Mrs. Northcroft, was washing clothes. The grandmother went to her home near by and when she returned there was no sign of the child. Mr. William Branson, of Taupo, who was fishing about a quarter of a mile l>elow the place where the child was last seen, noticed something floating down stream toward him and by using his rod brought the object to the bank, where he found it to be the body of the child. Two doctors fishing in the neighbourhood were called, but could do nothing.

At an inquest at Tanpo before the local coroner, the Rev. ,T. G. Laughton, a verdict of death by accidental drowning was returned.
