W.C.T.U.

The Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held its first meeting for the year in St. John's Methodist Hall on Thursday afternoon. Miss Read, the president, presided over a good attendance of members. Mi&s Read welcomed two new members, also some others who had not been able to attend the meetings for some time. It was decided to hold a cradle roll party next Thursday afternoon, February 25, at St. John's Hall. Miss Read invited the members to attend a farewell gathering next Monday afternoon to bid goodbye to Mrs. H. Kaspar, who is shortly leaving for England. Mrs. Bragg gave a report on her work as flower and philanthropic superintendent. The following temperance fact was given: "A pennyworth of bread contains more health-giving food than a quart of ale, beer or nourishing stout." Mrs. Watson was elected to represent the Ponsonby Union at the forthcoming Dominion convention to be held in Christchurch. Being "Frances Willard Day," Misa Read gave a brief talk on the life and work of Frances Willard, founder of the W.C.T.U. Mrs. Bragg was elected "notable days" superintendent, and Mrs. Joiner recording secretary.
