NEW SERVICE.
TRADE WITH EAST.
DUTCH .SHIPPING VENTURE.
FIRST 7ESSEL. IK MAT. In the belief that an extensive trade will develop, and that there will be a marked increase in the number of tourists, a Dutch shipping company, the Royal Packet Navigation Company, has inaugurated a service between the Dutch East Indies and the Dominion. The iirst vessel will be the Van Keee, due at Auckland on May 0.
Belief in the success of the venture is expressed by Mr. Schuurman, of Sydney, Consul-General for the Netherlands, who visited Christcliureh la«t week. Apart from sugar, the Dutch Ea«t Indies did little trade with the Dominion, but opportunities to build it up would be thoroughly explored. One way undoubtedly was through the tourist "industry." Few people from the Dutch East Indies had formerly come to New Zealand on the way back to Holland, but now numbers would probably increase, New Zealand's tourist attractions being likely to prove a great draw. On the other hand, New Zealanders going to England would be able to include Java in their itinerary. It would take about a week longer, and would enable visitors to see something quite diffsrent. Then those who were making a more leisurely journey Home would be able to see the coaat of North Australia, the Indies and Singapore.
