GLUT OF BEANS.
POOR BALE FOR FRUIT. APPLES ESPECIALLY CHEAP. There wasf* very poor demand for most lines of fruit at the City Markets to-day. Apple* %-ere especially dull of sale, with the excaption ■ pf a few extra choice coloured dessert lines, and there was no demand for cooking varieties. A fair quantity of Delicious apples are now coming on to the market, and are selling at very cheap rates. Peaches y* r « in fair demand, but plums, being scarce, were dear. The average price for tomatoes was lower. Hothouse grapes and pines were slow of sale, but there was a good demand for first-grade lemons. Oranges had only a fair inquiry, and ripe banana* again csold at cheaper rates.
A fresh shipment of Queensland pines is expected on Monday by the Aorangi. To-day's rates:—Apples: Albany Beauty, 6/ to 9/ case; Gravenstein, extra choice coloured, 7/ to 9/, others 4/ to 6/6; Cox's Orange, 5/ to 8/; Delicious, 2/ to 4/; cookers. 2/ to 4/. Pears: Bon Chretien, local .V to 8/, Hawke's »Bay 7/6 to 9/: cookers, 3' to 4/. Oranges: Jamaican, 30/ to 37.6; Japanese. 27/6. Lemons: Choice cured, 11/ to 14/: others, 4/ to 9/. Bananas: 14/ to 20/ case. Tines: Queensland. 14/ to 17/ case. Grapes: Hothouse. Hamburg, choice 9d to lid lb, others 6d upward*. Peaches: Paragon and Stark, 4/6 to 5 9 case: Late Red, 3/ to 3/6; Golden Queen, 3/6 to 4/6; others, in crates, 6 6 to 9/9. Plums: Doris, 8/ to 9/; Greengage, 9/ to 10/3. Nectarines: 9/ to 13/ case. Apricots: Otago, 6/6 to 9/ case. Strawberries: Captain Cook. 1/6 to 1/8 chip. Blackberries: Loose, 3d to 5d lb, 5d to 7d chip. Quinces: 6/ to 9/ case.
Vegetables. Cabbage and peas were in much heavier supply, and sold at lower rates to-day. Lettuce showed a rise in selling rates, arid c-auliflower sold at the same price as last week. Prime quality celery sold at good prices, cucumbers were a little cheaper, and kumaras remained at last week's level. Carrots and beet were cheap. Beans were practically unsaleable, and unless of choice quality were a glut on the market.
Sejling rates were:—Beet. 6d to lOd dozen; cooking celery, 8d to 1/ bundle; dessert celery, 2/6 to 3/ bundle; carrota, 6d to 1/ dozen; cauliflowers, 5/ to 7/ sack; cabbages, 2/ to 5/ benches V to 2/ dozen; cucumbers, 1/ to 3/ dozen; French beans. 1/ to 1/6 bag; stringless beans. 2/ to 3/6 bag; green peas, 2/ to 6/6 bag: kumarae, new season's, 2d to 2%d lb; leeks, 6d to 9d dozen; lettuce, 2/ to 5/ case; marrows, 6d to \' dozen: citron melons. 4/ to 5/ cwt; onions, 4/ to 5/ bag; potatoes, No. 1, 3/ to 4/9; pumpkins, 3/ to 5/ sack, choice ripe Warren 6/ to 9/ cwt; parsnips, 6d to lOd dozen: radish, 6d to 9d dozen; rhubarb, 1/ to 1/9 dozen; spinach. 1/ to 1/9 dozen; spring onions, 6d to KM bundle; swedes, 1/6 to 3/ bag; turnips, 6d to 8d dozen.
Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was good, and the demand was fairly keen. The price* paid remain practically unaltered, cockere's andr drakes selling a shade bettor. Selling ;ates were as follow: -Cockerel 4 - Heavy breeds, prime. 3/ to 5/ each; not prime. 1/ to I' 6; light breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2': not prime. 9d upwards. Fat roosters: Heavy breed*, prime, 2/ to 3/; light breed*. I' 6 to 1/9. Fat hens: Heavv breeds, 2 6 to 3/6; light breed*. 1/3 to 1,0. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/6 to 6/; smaller, 16 upwards: light breeds, best, 3/6 to 4/6; smaller. 1/6 upwards. Drakes: Yolrng, prime, 1/9 to 2/3; smaller, 1/ to 1/3; old, 1/6 to 1/9. Ducks: Young. 2/6 to 36; old, 1/6 to 1/9. Geese: 3/6 to 5/. Turkeys: Hens, 7/ to 10/; gobblers, 12/ to 17/6.
Butter and Eags. First grade eggs show no change in price. Quotations:—Hen: A grade, 1/10% dozen; B grade, 1/7%; C grade, 1/1%. Duck: A grade. 1/9% dozen; B grade, 1/8%: C grade. 1/1%. Farmers' buttar, 10% d to 1/1 'lb.
