GRASP SAVES LIFE.
MAN SUPS OVERBOARD. (By Telejjraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. Losing his footing on the deck of the steamer Matangi when the vessel lurched in a heavy sea yesterday, a passenger, Mr. R. A. Shearer, went overboard, but, managing to grasp the lower rail as he slid through, was able to regain the deck. He was on the lower after deck and was walking from one side to the other when the vessel gave a sudden lurch which sent him sliding on the wet dock. His shin struck a raft seat and he went hurtling over the "Side of the boat, but a lucky clutch at one of the lower iron railings saved him from falling into the sea, from which rescue under the conditions would have been impossible.
