FORCING THE PACE.
THROUGH SOLID ROCK.
NEW TUNNEL TO MILFORD. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. Digging through the Homer Saddle to form a tunnel to link with the new road to Milford is a tremendous task, but very satisfactory shooting has been done in the tunnel by the Public Works Department. So far about 350 ft of the complete length of over 5000 ft has been completed, and stronger machinery has been ordered for the speedy removal of the excavated material. The work was somewhat hampered in January, which was a particularly wet month, 27ins of rain falling in 25 days and interfering with operations outsid* the tunnel.
