FIJI'S GOLD. %
HUGE INCREASE FOR LAST YEAR
(From Our Own Correspon-lent)
SUVA, January 27.
The exports of gold from Fiji for the year 1936 amounted to the large total of 16,972 ounces, which about doubles the output of 193.5. At the moderate price of £8 10/ per ounce this shows a value in Australian currency of over £144.252. About two-thirds of the above came from the Emperor mine, while Mount Kasi provided the remainder. These two properties were the only mines to provide the fold exported. Conskl»ring that the large new plant at the Emperor has not )-et been completed, and that a similar position exists to a smaller extent at Vanua Levu, while the latter mine was closed for a while also, the output shows that Fiji is more than maintaining the reputation first won during the boom. Gold is to be found in every stream throughout the colony, but the restrictions enforced by the mining laws cramp prospecting and restrain investigation.
