RACE FOR THE UPTON CUP. TAMARIKI BEATS KOMURI. 38S. The Ponsonby Cruising Club held the annual race for the Lipton Cap on Saturday in a hard breeze from the west. Ten boats started. Tamariki. representing , the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, winning, after a very close race, by 38s from Komuri. representing the Ponsonby Cruising Club, with Rakoa. Devonport Yacht Club, third. Last year's winner. Valerie, representing the Naval Sailing Club, carried away her mainsail soon after rounding the "white light buoy in Rangitoto Channel, while Marie, representing the Tamaki Yacht Club, capsized off the Snndspit when running down harbour from the starting line and was towed ashore by the motor boat Cyrena. Marie. Rakoa. Mnrika, Valeria. Valkyrie and Huia all close together. After passing —andspit beacon Mnrie's spinnaker got out of hand and sht> capsized, being towed to the Artillery wharf by Cyrena. Tamariki now closed' up on Macushla as they nearod the lop mark. The order of luffing round the white light mark was Macushla 7s ahe:>d of Tamariki, which was 14s abend of Rakoa. followed by Komuri. Valkyrie, Valeria Hnia and Marika all within .Vis. and Melita later. After hauling on the wind all stood on starboard tack towards the Bastion After sailing loss than a minute, on the wind, and when heading well up. the after leach of Valeria's mainsail ca'rried away and she was out of the race, being towed back by a Xav.i] pinnace. The Lipton Cup was informally presented on Saturday evening in ihe Akarana Yrtcht Clubhouse, owing t> the removal further seaward of the Ponsonby Cruising ('!«b'« building at St. Mary's Bay. The president, Mr. Fred. W. Jeffers, presided. He was sunorted by tin- comiuoilore. Mr. J. C. Willcocks. als.> of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Sijuadron (Mr. H. .1. C. Geo.-ge). Akarana (Mr. T. MeKnight). Victoria (Mr. E. Griffiths.. Richmond (Mr. M. Hill). Tamaki (Mr. W. A. Wilkinson), and Mei-srs. A. and T. 1.. Thompson. A. J. Ceilings. G. Pale, and V. Harrison, Whangarei Cruising Club, and a number of other representative yachtsmen. The chairman welcomed tho guests a:id offered his club's congratulations to the "Royals" *>n their victory, and to the skipper ("Farmer"' Willetts) and crew of the Tamnriki on their splendid performance. Mr. Jeffers also thanked Mr. F. Lidganl (skipper) and J. and F. Worthingtou of Komuri for fhe good fight they put up on behalf of the Ponsonby Club, and concluded by a toast to the winning crew Mr. A. Thompson replied on behalf of the crew of Tamariki. Her skipper. W A. Wifletts also thanked Mr. Jeffers for his good wishes. It had bee* a hard race and it took him all his time, with the help of a good crew, to put* Taniari'ii over the finishing line first, he said. Mr. George thanked the Ponsonby Club for their congratulations. The race wa» a good one, and he dsked that the cup be held jointly by the owners. Messrs. B. and X. Thompson and Mr. Willetts. The manner in which the boats had been handled in the Anniversary Regatta under trying conditions was the subject of favourable, comment by Mr. E. Griffiths, chairman of the Anniversary Regatta committee, who said that the regatta had been a record one in all ways. They had long wanted a breeze on Regatta Day and when it did come it caught many unprepared, he said. Mr. V. Harrison, secretary of the Whangarei Cruising Club, was among the I visitors. He assured the gathering that j the Whangarei regatta would soon again become an annual event worth attending.
