SUBSIDY JUSTIFIED
The subsidised gold mining mid prospecting scheme, which was introduced sit t'oromandel in November, 1081, is said to have justified itself. An official report recently sent to Wellington shows the following figures for subsidised men only: 1VK!:!, 7-oz 4dwt of gold were recovered, tie value being £:14.V, V.m, 2SBoz 4dwt, £lfl8; l'.Klo. :«Ooz 2dwt. £ltil7; I(KMi, :{u7oz lidwt, £1816. Thp total is 10470.Z lTdwt. valued at £51'.Mi.
The report for the six months ended December 31 last shows that the principal areas in which tin: men are working are CnromandPl (.".."> men). Kuaotunu CJ), Ttiirua. Hikuai (!)). The quantity of gold won by subsidised men during this Inter period was If):!o7., valued at 0)42. and the production of gold during this period was approximately 23 per cent greater than that of. liic previous six months.
