LITTLE GIRL DROWNED.
PITYING CLOSE TO RIVER.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday
Through falling 20ft from an overhanging tree into the swollen river at Tangarakau yesterday, June Stewart, aged eight years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Stewart, was drowned before help could be obtained. The body was recovered this morning after dragging.
The girl was playing near the stream with her brother Donald, aged four, and Colin, the five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Gordon. Neither of her playmates was clear regarding what happened, but it appears that the girl climbed out on the branch of a tree overhanging a deep pool"and fell, striking the foot of the steep papa bank before falling into the water. There was a bruise on her forehead when the body was recovered.
