OBITUARY.

MR. JOHN HOGAN.

Mr. John Hogan, a prominent business and sporting man of Newcastle, New South Wales, who died there recently, was born at Pa mini re iu 1867, his father, Mr. James Hogan, being one of the first military non-commissioned officers to settle ther-j. Before leaving for Australia, more "tban/.SOyeafs ago, Mr. Hoean was recognised as a champion shot at gun club meetings, and he was generally a keen all-round athlete, being agpod Rupby football player. He der&fel to. enter business in Newcastle, and proved successful, his auctioneering firm, which he founded 30 years apo, being the largest in the district. His services for charity were widely known, and he took a prominent part in the Hunching .of several large and successful appeals on behalf of the Newcastle Mater Miscricordiae Hospital, of which he was president of the men's committee. Mr. Hogan was proud of New Zealand, and was for some years president of thi New Zealandcrs* Association in Newcastle. He had many friends in spotting circles, and played a prominent part in the administrative affairs of the Rugby code. He was always associated with welcomes given to the All Black teams when they visited Newcastle. and during the tour of the 1003 New Zealand representatives the inana"er, on behalf of the team, named his home "Kia Ora," as a tribute to his kindness. He l>nd an enthusiastic interest iu lacing, and had been elected unopposed every year since 1929 president of the Newcastle Tattersall's Club.

The funeral procession was a mile long, and comprised representatives jof all sections of the community. Mr. Hogan is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. Three sisters still live at Pantnure; they are Mrs. M. Fleming and Misses Annie and Belle Hogan.
