JULIANA'S MARRIAGE

BRITISH INTEREST. LINKING OF PEOPLES. EASTERN HONEYMOON SUGGESTED. LONDON, December 12. Relations between Britain and the Netherlands are close and likely to become closer. We and the Dutch have many interests in common. Both Britain and the Netherlands are great colonial Powers, with important overseas possessions. The border of Dutch New Guinea marches with that of Papua. Holland "is the only country in the world that has a common land frontier with a Commonwealth possession. In the East the British and the Dutch authorities understand each other very well. Many of the Dutch regard the Singapore base as serving their interests just as much as those of Britain. For these reasons British people who follow these matters share in the interest which the marriage to take place at The Hague on January 7 between Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld has aroused in Holland. To this interest is added just now a sort of mild envy of the smoothness with which the course of Royal true love seems to run just across the North Sea. The Princess will in .due course -succeed her mother. Queen Wilhelmina. as riot be Kingr birt 1 -Pi-Bice Consort. No difficulties - seem likely-to arise. , The Dutch are a business-like people, and they are pleased -to find that the Prince takes work seriously. Before his engagement he was in the Paris offices of a large German firm. To-day he finds time to do a good deal of work in the business of a great Dutch banking firm, the Haandelsmaat Schappij, in Amsterdam. There seems to be the greatest enthusiasm in the Netherlands for the marriage. The Netherlands Indies is also showing the greatest interest. It is hoped that after the marriage the Princess Juliana and her husband will pay a honeymoon visit to the East Indies. They will then be on the very , threshold of Australia.
