SALVAGE WORK.
PENSILVA'S LONG TOW. 1200 MILES TO 'FRISCO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The Pensilva, which arrived at Lyttelton from Ocean Island last week, brought a etory of salvage work which she carried out in response to a wireless message from a Greek ship. The Pensilva had a full cargo of phosphates for discharge at Lyttelton and Ravensbourne. She had an uneventful trip to Lyttelton from Ocean Island, when she was delayed by a westerly gale which hindered her loading operations. The vessel is expected to leave Lyttelton on Tuesday for Ravensbourne. Later she will proceed to Cairns, Queensland, where she will load sugar for the United Kingdom. The amount to be awardea for the salvage job undertaken by the Pensilva will run into a big figure, it is said, and a good proportion of it will be paid to the officers and crew, every man on board, from the master to the galleyboy, receivine a share. The salvage occurred on August 31, while the Pensilva was bound from Jacksonville, Florida, to Japan with a cargo of scrap iron. A wireless message was received from the Greek steamer Alfios, about 6000 tons, bound from Boston to Japan—also with scrap" J£ on T ask ! n ", for towage assistance. 1 urning back on her course, the Pensilva steamed 400 miles, and on September 2 took the Alfios in tow for San Francisco, 1200 miles away. The Greek steamer had been disabled through smashing her rudder and carrying away her stern post.
