A CARELESS APPEARANCE.

IT DOESN'T PAY. I More and more women are fealising that, the attitude of "not being bothered" about their appearance does not pay. In business and social life, and even in domestic circles, it is the woman who takes pride in her looke and clothes who is regarded as smart and efficient. Dowdy clothes and neglected looks may be the outward expression of a mind that is fixed on higher things, of true unselfishness, so concerned with the welfare of others that no time is given to self, or they may be just the result of thoughtlessness and a "can't be bothered" attitude, which is akin to laziness. Nowadays, however, one sees very few women who are really dowdy and unkempt. Most modern girls use make-up to a degree that older women find unattractive, but even the quite oklfashioned generally indulge in a touch of powder, and they realise the value of cold cream and the charm of nicelvkept hands and hair. Without making beauty a fetish, without spending much money on beauty treatments and giving up hours to exercises, etc., it is possible to improve one's looks and make the most °f existing good points while disguising the bad ones. Attention to health and hygiene, diet and exercise, and a few minutes daily given to the care of skin, eyes, hands and hair do really work wonders. There are manv effective home treatments that cost but .1 few pence. Care in choosing clothes is essential if only a little money is available. It is quite possible, if one is a good shopper to buy really attractive, well-made clothes very reasonably. It always pays to have special house clothes and overalls for working, and nowadays overalls can be bought very cheaply in all kinds of styles, colours and materials. Cheapness and drabness are no longer allied, and because one can only afford to spend little on clothes it does not follow they need be inferior or dull.
