OBITUARY.

MR. FRANK SUMMERS. The death has occurred at his home in Meadowbank Road, Kerauera, of Mr. Frank .Summers, aged 78. Mr. Summers was born at Petersfield, Hampshire, on December 22. 1859, and was educated in England and Germany. As a youni man he joined the 17th Lancers and took part in the Zulu War in South Africa, being present at the Majuba engagement. At the end of the first South African War Mr. Summers joined the Cape Mounted Police, of which he was a member for several years. Coming to New Zealand in the steamship lonic. Mr. Summers landed at Auckland about 1 SB-">. and for a time he was connected with earlv volunteer movements in the city. He later went north and took up farming. From North Auckland he moved to the Matamata estate, and for many years he was also engaged in farming in the Whakatane district. He was prominent in all progressive movements affecting the welfare of the Taneatua district! Mr. Summers was instrumental in forming the Whakatane Mounted Kifles, and was associated also with the foundation of the Whakatane Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He came to Auckland at the request of Lord Ranfurly. then Oovernor-General. to attend the foundation ceremony at the \ eterans Home. Epsom, and shortly after this visit left Wliakatane for Waimauku. where he farmed for 11 years Iwfore his retirement a few vears ago. Mr. Summers is survived by his wife, five sons and three daughters. There are 14 grandchildren. Four of his sons served in the Great War.
