\ ery satisfactory progress is being made by Hawera horses that are being prepared for the holiday racing. Hawera stables at present shelter a very promising lot, • and the prospects for the remainder of tile season look encouraging. On the Plough. Intended for jumping races, the Mint Leaf mare Mint Tour (W. Grindley), after pacing a round, sprinted home three furlongs in 38s. Mint Tour has built up in condition, and works well, and should prove useful when next asked to race. Setting out from the seven-furlong peg, Student Prince (Cole), Master Limond (S. Hawkes) and Briorni (L. Pepperill) occupied 14s over the first furlong, and 54s for the half-mile. The pace livened up from here, and Student Prince canie away to win by two lengths, with Master Limond shading Briorni at the finish in 1.33 1-5, the last three furlongs being covered in 39 l-ss. This was a good workout, with honours going definitely to Student Prince. Strong pace work was apportioned Supreme Court (C. Cochrane), Glenthawn (N. Creighton), and King Koroki (Howe). The two first-named look particularly well, and revelled in their work. Autumn Leaf (K. Grylls) was responsible for a smart half-mile, beating Gold Baud (C. Cole) by the best part of a length in 50s. Beginning very smartly Autumn Leaf led over the first quarter, covered in 24%5, luit was ridden right out at the finish. Notium (C. Cole) was given a round at solid three-quarter jjace, hitting out in good style. Gay Step (L. Monkley), the maiden in O. Cox's stable, has been nominated for the Wairarapa meeting. Her half-mile was accomplished in ol'/ss, after breaking 38s over the first three furlongs.

In a workout together Onewhetu (F. Howe), Ned Cuttle (N. Crcighton), Soloist '(P. Button) and International (11. Cook) rail the last four furlongs of a mile in 54 3-ss. Onewhetu is rapidly approaching his best form, and Ned Cuttle also impressed.

The Melbourne Cup winner Wotan lias made marked improvement since his return, and iy working very resolutely, and presents a much improved appearance to when last raced in New Zealand.

Advance Plane (H. Fryer) sprinted three furlongs in 375, finishing strongly. Le Grande, about the best looking horse oil the Hawera tracks, is putting plenty of energy into his tasks of solid pace work over a couple of rounds.

Friesland (W. Pine) and Lowenberg (L. Monk ley) were sent six furlongs, covering the fiist half-mile in 51s. They finished up in 1.17, with Friesland a head in front. Both are in tip-top order for their holiday engagements. Kia Ora, Kia Tore and Shemseh were given steady pace exercise. Corowa (K. Grylls) and Beau Star (Grindlay) were companions in a gallop over four furlongs. Corowa finishing a length in front in olVis. Beau Star is ill great heart, and has been doing plenty of road work. Course Proper. Fair Day (Monkley) finished in front of Fairy Dale (S. Hawkes) at the end of half a mile covered in 52c*. The two-year-olds Pantoon (Burney) and Bina (Howe) sprinted a couple of furlongs up the straight in 24 3-ss, the former shaping the better. Mrs. Curie, owner of Black Friar, paid a visit to Hawera during the week-end to see her colt worked. Black Friar, who lightened up as a result of his trip to Australia, is beginning to pick up in condition again, and should be in nice order for autumn racing.
