Press Association reports from southern centres show substantial increases in Customs revenue for the month of November. At Wellington the figures constituted a record. Details are as follow:—
Wellington.—The net Customs revenue for November totalled £338,390, a record.for Wellington, eclipsing the previous record of £324,868 in September, 1920. by £13,522. The sales tax was £105,912, more than' £100,000 for the iirst time anywhere in New Zealand. Details are as' follows, the figures for November, 1935, being given in parentheses:—Customs, £338,390 (£255,872); motor spirit, £60,123 ( £07,519); tyre tax, £1719 ( £1470); sales tax, £105,912 ( £78,457); beer excise, £7110 ( £5096). The figures for eleven months, with those of the corresponding period last year, are:—Customs, £3,013,524 ( £2.167,808); motor spirit^; \£f37;M6 (£557.772); tyre tax,. £19,766 (£22,372); sales tax,;/ £981,419 (£787.219); beer excise, £56,560 (£50,178).
Christchurcli.—lncreases in every item of Customs revenue collected at Christchurch are shown in the totals of the first eight months of the financial year, compared with the same period last year. The figures are as follows, those for 1935 being in parentheses:—Customs, £714,055 (.€588.740); beer duty, £07,066 (£50,819); sales tax, £200,844 ( £214,265); petrol tax, £159,088 (£124.203); tyre duty, £7541 (£0797). The November figures are; —Customs, £91,000 (£77,446); beer duty, £9543 (£0437); sales tax. £33,791 (£30,170); petrol tax, £934 (£1080).
Dunedin. —Substantial increases in Customs, beer, sales and petrol taxes are revealed when the figures for November are compared with those for the corresponding period of 1935. Gold duty is slightly lower, while there was a big decrease in tyre tax. Increases are also recorded wherl the eight-monthly period April to November is compared with the corresponding eight months of last year, only tyre tax showing a small decrease. The figures for November, with those for last vear in parentheses, are: —Customs, £02.009 (£55,511); beer, £25,727 ( £23,940); sales tax. £23,583 ( £22,972); petrol tax, £13,834 (£10,592); tyre tax, £347 ( £1009); gold tax, £155S ( £1034). The following are the returns for the first eight months of the financial year, with those for the same period last year:—Customs, £447.810 (£422,042); 'beer, £173.88S £150,392); sales tax, £188,070 (£105,034); petrol tax. £107.340 ( £89,700); tyre tax. £5118 ( £5950); gold tax, £15,44} ( £14.G50).
