CHIEF JUSTICE DIES.
SOUTH AFRICAN JURIST
JOHANNESBURG, November 3,
One of the many great jurists whom South Africa has produced, Sir John Wessels, Chief Justice of the Union, has died at the age of 74. Sir John Wessels belonged to a period of great development in South African jurisprudence, when men like Henry de Villiers, Rose-Innes and William Solomon were giving it a supremely competent direction. A man of rare learning, he carried it lightly, shunning pedantry and applying to the law a practical and common-sense outlook.
His fame as a jurist was not restricted •to his own country; it was established pretty well all over the European Continent.
