HOURS OF NURSES.

COST TO HOSPITAL.

ADOPTING FORTY-HOUR WEEK

DEPARTMENT'S INQUIRY,

The cost of introducing the' 40-hour week among the nursing staff of the Auckland Hospital would involve an added expenditure of £22,000 a year. This fact, which was revealed at the meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday, has been communicated to the Department of Health and later an answer .was received. The Department asked for details of the scheme of introduction, showing liow it would affect the nursing arrangements in a typical ward. The chairman, the Rev. W. C. Wood, said that it seemed the Department had rather sidestepped the question. No proper reply had been given on the financial question. Mr. W. H. Potter said that the Government had established a basic wage and a 40-liour week. Traders had decided to give effect to this at great sacrifice. If any institution in the world should be treated liberally it should be the nursing staff of a hospital. He considered the board should give effect to the Government's intentions. It was decided to supply the information asked for.
