WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

MAKING GOOD PROGRESS. The three-year-old Indiana in L. McMahon's stable is shaping up well, and has been making satisfactory progress as the results of several fast workouts of late. She is a well-grown filly, by Jewel Pointer from Ursuline, and when she is required j to race should pay her way. I : RECOMMISSIONED. A. Patten is putting in a lot of time with Fisher and Roi Grande, who have just returned to work after a long spell, and both are very big in condition. Fisher, in particular, looks as if . he will take some time to fine down. This pacer has a fine turn of speed, but does not always reproduce his best, and his record is not a good one. Roi Grande was one of the best ! trotters trained locally, but he was troubled with recurring soreness, and was always more or less unsound. IN NICE ORDER. Charteris Bay has taken no harm from the racing he had at the recent .Auckland meeting, and is looking ill nice order for engagements at the forthcoming Waikato meeting. Charteris Bay is m excellent beginner, and at Epsom last month, after being unlucky on the first day, paced a splendid race into third place in the Newmarket Handicap off 36yds on the second day. Since, being raced unhoppled he has gone much better, and a win should come his way before very long. SHOULD WIN AGAIN. One of the most impressive wins at the Auckland meeting last month was that of Mountain Flight in the Stewards' Handicap. She had been working well prior to the fixture, and her connections were very confident of the mare winning. She began well, and dropped into third positio'n after the field had got safely 011 the way, a place she held until the top was reached. She ran to the lead as the field came to the turn, and from this point on never looked in danger of defeat. Mountain Flight is a shapely filly by Blue Mountain King from Manna, and looks like winning several more races this season. SUCCESSFUL OWNER. Mr. G. J. Barton is one of the most successful sportsmen who have ever entered trotting in this country. During his twelve years' association with the sport his 'horses have won over £60.0(10 in stakes, and every important handicap race iA the Dominion. His best pacer, Indianapolis is the first horse to win three Xew Zealand Trotting Cups, and other pacing celebrities that have carried his colours to victory are Corn-lift', in the Duuedin Cup; Nelson Derby and Indianapolis, in the Auckland Cup: Indianapolis in the Free-for-All. Mountain Dell in the National Cup, and Napland in the Dominion Trotting Cup. Mr. Barton is regarded as one of the best sportsmen in New Zealand. He maintains a big stable, and has never spared expense in the care and training of his horses, and he has never been lacking in his appreciation of his trainer, his driver and his staff's efforts. A GOOD FILLY. The contest for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, run at Addington last week, was an excellent one, and all honours go to Parisienne. She went to the front at the end of a furlong, and cracked 011 the pace to the tune of 2.19 for the first mile. She came home over the last four furlongs in 1.0 3-5, and silenced the opposition. She won going away from her 1 field. Frisco Boy and Southern Chief followed her all the way, but could not beat her. Donald Dliu was the unlucky horse of the race. He began quickly, but 1 struck trouble when he had traversed a furlong, and lost three lengths. He finished in good style, and was beaten by only a head for third money. Parisienne is a very reliable filly, and a great stayer. She is by Re.v de Oro from Yenot, and was bred by her owner. She was educated | by the well-known trainer of gallopers Hector Gray, but has been attached to I R. B. Berry's stable for some time. She j won the Now Zealand Sapling Stakes, and judged by her success in the New Zealand Derby Stakes she is destined to I reach the best class.
