WORK AT NAVAL BASE.

WARSHIPS VISIT SOUTH. ACHILLES' FIRST TOUR. The ships of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy will soon be away from Auckland in the course of their annual summer cruises to the southern ports of the Dominion. The sloop H.M.S. Wellington is already oil her ivsv and the others will follow shortly. H.M.S. Dunedin, which will be leaving for England to pay off early in the new year, leaves ou a southern cruise on November 3, going first to Picton. Slie will be followed by H.M.S. Achilles on November 7. The Achilles, which is making her first visit south, will call first at Wellington. The sloop H.M.S. Leith, which was to hav© made a short cruise before paying off on November 16, will now probably remain in Auckland. Owing to the Calliope Dock having been fully engaged during recent weeks, her refit has been j delayed, and the Leitli now goes into dock on October 28. Her, new complement of officers and ratings arrive by the Rangitane in Wellington on November 16, and Captain Oliver Bevir. his officers and ratings sail for England by the Rangitata on November 17. H.M.S. Wellington has nearly another nine months to serve on this station before her complement is paid off. H.M.S. Dunedin will probably leave Auckland for the last time in February and will'be paid off in England, before the new cruiser, H.M.S. Wellington, which sailed on Wednesday for Gisborne, is as follows: —Gisborne, October 23 to 27; Napier, October 28 to November 4; Lyttelton,' November 6 to 13; Timaru, November 14 to 19; Nelson and Queen Charlotte Sound, November 20 to 26; Wellington, November 27 to December 4; Dargaville, December 7 to 10; Auckland, December 12. H.M.S. Dunedin's itinerary is: —Picton, November 5 to 11; Dunedin, November 12 to 18; Akaroa, November 19 to 23; Lyttelton, November 23 to 30; Wellington, December 1 to 7; Auckland, DecernThe Achilles will visit the following ports:—Wellington, November 9 to 12; Lvttelton, November 13 to 17; Akaroa, November 17 to 22; Dunedin, November 23 to 26; New Plymouth, November 28 to December 1; Auckland, December 3. Training Work. While these cruises are being prepared for the work of extending the Devonport Naval Base, and the establishment of munition dumps and other equipment at Kauri Point, is being pushed ahead—as is also training work on H.M.b. .rtiilomel. Yesterday the final examination this year of boys desiring to-'enter the New Zealand Division as recruits was conducted. Thirty-seven men and boys from all parts of New Zealand were a-.ib-mitted to the final tests, and from them 15 stoker trainees and one cook were selected.
