ACID FUMES.
OUTBREAK OF FIRE IN CITY. At 11.54 last- night the central fire station, received a call to a small fire> in the process department on the' top floor o2 the "Star" building. The seat of the fire was a box containing straw and packing materials which accidentally became saturated with acid. Slow combustion is thought to have been the cause of the outbreak. Although there were no actual flames, the quantity of smoke and fumes was so great that the firemen had to use masks when extinguishing the fire with buckets of water and chemical extinguishers. The watchman .liseovered the smoke and before tlie outbreak had time to spread lie gave the alarm. Since the alarm was in the danger area four machines from the central fire station, also one from Parnell, and one from Western Districts turned out. Practically no damage was done.
