CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. R. DAVIES BEATS C. SPENCER. J.he final of the Auckland provincial amateur snooker championship was played last evening at the showrooms of Messrs. Billiards, Limited, R. Davies, of Auckland, defeating C. Spencer, Te Awamutu, by three games to two. Spencer displayed confidence at the start of the first game and gained a slight lead by means of accurate potting and clever placements. Davies kept the play close, but his opponent maintained his lead and won the game by 48 points to 23. The second game was keenly contested and, although neither player received many openings, each played some splendid shots. Both were applauded for clever snookers and splendid recoveries. Spencer held the advantage with only the last four balls on the table. Davies looked a possible winner after potting the brown, blue and pink, but Spencer finally triumphed by 43 points to 40. i Davies improved in the third game and led for most of the time. He was hardpressed over the latter stages, but he managed to secure the black and win by 53 points to 48. The scores fluctuated in the fourth game, Davies again securing victory by potting the black. With the games even, the final match was keenly contested, both players giving accurate displays. Davies forged ahead as a result of some costly mistakes by his opponent, while the former was also favoured by the run of the play. Davies won the deciding game by 65 points to 33. The president of the Auckland Billiards Association, Mr. W. E. Hackett, congratulated the contestants on their display and presented Davies with the championship cup, also a gold medal. A cue and box was presented to the runner-up, while H. Shepherd received a cue for compiling the largest break of the tournament.
