BRITAIN'S SLUM CLEARING. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, October 12. Special interest attaches to figures compiled by the Ministry of Health 011 the progress of slum clearance schemes and the campaign against overcrowding. It is estimated that the total number of houses to be dealt with under the five-year slum clearance scheme will be about 300,000. Clearance orders and compulsory purchase orders submitted by local authorities to the Ministry of Health up to the end of September affected 149,291 houses, with 043,741 persons resident in them. Steady progress is being made with the rehousing of those affected by clearances. At the end of August there were 57,302 houses under construction. The total number of houses included in the proposals approved by the Ministry of Health is 172,420, and the number" of houses already completed about 110,000. 111 connection with the campaign against overcrowding investigations into the conditions prevailing in 9,000,000 houses out of the total of between 11,000,000 and 12,000,000 houses in the country are proceeding. It has been found that about 3.8 . per cent of the houses investigated come within the official description of overcrowded.
