DEMAND FOR APPLES.

NEW POTATOES CHEAPER
I I Good quality apples and pears had a satisfactory demand at the City Markets to-day. There were also good inquiries for pineapples, and lemons and poormun oranges sold fairly readily. Tree tomatoes are becoming increasingly scarce and gooc specimens realised high prices. Hothouse tomatoes had a fair demand, but values ! declined when the fresh supplies ot Island | fruit arrived from Wellington. Heavy Vegetable Supply. New potatoes, green peas and asparagus were in much heavier supplies to-day, with prices lower. New potatoes are now coming in increasing quantities from Pukekohe, Swanson, Henderson, Avondale and other suburban districts. _ Cabbage and cauliflower were also plentiful. Hie season for celery is practically over and the quality of that still arriving is very poor. Onions were a glut on the market. Quotations: — Asparagus, 4d to lOd per bundle; beet. 6d to 1/ per dozen; celery, cooking, 3d per bundle; dessert, 6d; carrots, 1/ to 2/ per dozen; cauliflowers, 2/ to 4/ per sack; on benches, 6d to 1/6 per dozen; cabbages, 1/6 to 6/6 per sack; on benches, Cd to 1/6 per dozen; cucumbers, hothouse, 5/ to 7/6 per dozen; French beans, hothouse, 7d to 1/ per lb; green peas, 3d to 7d; kumaras, Island, 20/ to 23/ per cwt; Tauranga, 5/ to 7/ per bag; leeks, 6d to 1/ per dozen; lettuce, 1/ to 5/6 per case; onions, local, 3/ to 4/6 per bag; Canadian, 12/ to 14/; potatoes, new, No. 1, 2 1 ,4 dto 3Vid per lb; No. 2, Id to 2d; Southern, 0/ per cwt; pumpkins, choice Triumble, 20/ to 30/"; parsnips, 6d to 9d per dozen; radish. 6d to lOd; rhubarb, 1/ to 2/6; spinach, 1/ to 1/9; spring onions, 3d to 8d per bundle; swedes, 2/ to 2/6 per bag; turnips, 4cl to 9d per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was keen. The prices paid show a slight rise in some lines. Selling rates were as follow: —Cockerels, heavy breeds, prime, 4/ to 6/ each; not prime, 2/6 up; light breeds, prime, 3/ to 5/; not prime, 2/ upj fat roosters, heavy breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2/3; light breeds, 1/3 to 1/6; fat heavy breeds, 2/3 to 3/6; light breeds, 1/6 to 2/3; pullets, heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 4/3; smaller, 1/6 up; light breeds, best, 3/ to 4/3; smaller, 1/6 up; drakes, young, prime, 2/6 to 3/6; smaller, 1/6 up; ducks, young, 2/3 to 3/3; old, 1/6 to 2/6; drakes, old, 1/6 to 2/6; cockerel chicks, heavy breeds, 4d to 1/6; light breeds, Id to 6d; ducklings, 6d to 8d; guinea fowls, 4/6 to 5/6. Butter and Eggs. Eggs.—Hen: A grade, \/0 l A per dozen; B, llV&d; C, BMrl. Duck: A grade, 1/OVz; B, imd; C. 9%d. Farmers' Butter.—lOd to 1/1 per lb.
