GAS FUEL PRODUCTION.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Dr. E. W. Smith, technical director of the Woodall, Duckham Companies, England, arrived 011 a brief visit to the Dominion to-day. He is an expert on matters connected with the production of gas fuel, and is aseociated with many organisations at Home. The visitor has done a considerable amount of work in conjunction with the Fuel 'Research Board. He is chairman of the World Power Conference, vicechairman of the Chemical Engineers' Congress and a member of the Institute of Gas Engineers. He expressed the view that New Zealand is one of the most suitable countries in the world for the production of motor fuel from brown coals and lignites by the Fischer process, but said a high expectation and a low cost of petrol was not justified. It would require heavy protective duties 01 a subsidy to make such a process pay.
