THAMES ORPHANS.
LADIES' EVENING HELD. The Thames Orphans' C'lub concluded its season on Saturday when it entertained the wives and lady friends of its members at the Majestic Theatre, there being a very large attendance. Bro. L. P. Leary, of Auckland, was chairman, and a large proportion of the programme was supplied by Auckland members. The chairman took for the subject of his address "Children," prefacing his remarks with several amusing stories of the development of the mind of the child of tender years. In a more serious vein Mr. Leary spoke of the effect of the emancipation of women in the downfall of the Roman Empire and Greece and the great responsibility placed on the women of the British Empire to-day. A varied programme was presented and included items by the Thames Orphans' orchestra, conducted by Bro. A. Clark, songs by Mr. R Richards, humour by Mr. Dan Floodj concertina selections bv Mr. W. Shepley' elocutionary items by Mr. W. Skimming, a gymnastic display by Bro. Wilson and his troupe, and card ma«ic bv Cardo. ° ' Before the evening closed Bro. W. J. Da 11 by, on behalf of the members of the club, thanked the president and members or the committee for the many excellent programmes arranged during the season and assured them of loyalty and support next season. Votes „f thanks to the chairman and to those who had contributed items on the programme concluded a successful evening.
