GOOD PROGRESS.
ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN.
NEW LIGHTING REGULATIONS?
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINTON, Monday. Although appointed only a short time ago, sub-eominittees set up by the New Zealand Road Safety Council have already accomplished a good deal toward compiling their respective reports. Little can be done until comments on the proposed traffic regulations have been received from local bodies. The aspects of the pedestrian, the cyclist and the motorist are being considered by the propaganda and education committees, which hope to reach some finality at a meeting on Friday. Means of propaganda are being considered. The child education committee has had one meeting, and hopes to report to the council at an early date. The lighting committee has concentrated on the lighting of vehicles, but it also proposes to deal later with the lighting of highways. Several practical demonstrations have been held and varjpus systems applying to the English and New Zealand regulations have been tried. Experiments are also being made with number-plates, with the object of making them very easily distinguishable at night. At present the illumination of number-plates by tail lights is not considered adequate, and in many leases it is said to be difficult to rea'd the figures at more than 20ft. The ! regulations applying to lighting are being circulated, and certain amendments will be recommended to tn3 council. The roads improvement committee has not yet met, but it proposes to deal with its section early next week, No meeting has been held by the traffic laws committee, which is awaiting comment from local bodies.
