SPRING RACING.

PAEROA MEETING.

TAUMARUNUI CLUB. ORAC THE PRESIDENT'S. BLUE NEEDLE WINS SPRINT. The Tauniarunui Racing Club concluded their annual meeting at Paeroa yesterday in beautiful weather, and it was the most successful ever hekl by them, for there were large attendances each day and the totalizator showed an increase of £19,131 10/ for the fixture. Yesterday £15,66S was handled at the machine, compared with £6701 10/, an increase of £5966 10/. The total for the meeting was £37,043, against £17,911 10/. The steeplechase provided a most j thrilling race, only two of the eight starters completing the course without mistake, and an account of it is published elsewhere. All the Way. Tradesman, Lord Val and King Musk were scratched from the President's Handicap, and at the close of betting the chief fancies were Bonny Gay, Silver Briar and Te Hai. However, a surprise was again in store, the outsider, Orac, winning and paying over double figures.

Orac began smartly, and took up the early running from Silver Briar, Te Hai, Bonny Gay and Sinking Fund. Except that Te Hai had headed Silver Briar along the back there was no alteration, and across the top the order was Orac, Te Hai, Bonny Gay, Silver Briar, Sinking Fund and Delrain. Orac was still in the van rounding the home turn, where Te Hai, Bonny Gay, Sinking Fund and Silver Briar were all handy. Sinking Fund then came fast, but failed to reach Orac by a short neck, with Bonny Gay a, length away. Silver Briar, Delrain and Te Hai finished as named. Favourite Unplaced. All went to the post for the Novice Handicap, and when betting closed most support was accorded Locknit, Brown Lap and Lady Valma. When the field settled down along the back Lady Valma had charge from Strathire, Racela, Locknit and Susan. Lady Valma was still the leader racing across the top, where Strathire, Locknit, Queen Lu, Racela, Susan, Shining Spear, Brown Lap, Miss Mestor, Betterment and Poker Face were following in that order. Strathire headed Lady Valma before the turn was reached, and was first to straighten up from Queen Lu, Lady Valma, Sue.an, Locknit, Brown Lap and Poker Face. A rare tussle then ensued, and in a great finish Lady Valma got up to win by a short head from Strathire, with Poker Face, finishing on, a neck away. Susan was fourth, and then came Queen Lu, Racela and Brown Lap.

The Open Six. Prince Acre was not saddled up for i the Railway Handicap, and Blue Needle, • Legatee and Wahine Reihi had most ; friends, the first-named leading all the ; way to win by a narrow margin. She J was attended aloiig the back by Grand ; Score, Legatee and Lady Ruler, with I Wahine Reihi and Star Artist next. I Crossing the top the ffirst-named pair were showing the way to Wahine Reihi, | Legatee and Lady Ruler, with Star ; Artist x still at the rear. There was no ; change into the straight, where the field ! closed up, and in a good finish Blue | Needle held on to win by a neck from Legatee, with Star Artist, who finished ! well, three-quarters of, a length away. Wahine Reihi, Lady Ruler and Grand Score were next. ; A Small Field. Only four went to-the post for the concluding event, the Farewell Handicap, and Johnny Walls was installed a warm favourite. Sir Tommy was in front from Lady Diana, Johnny Walls and Bonny Song when the field settled down, arid as they crossed the-top-Sir Tommy was followed by Johnny Walls, Lady Diana and Bonny Song. Johnny Walls', ■was alongside Sir Tommy at the home | turn, and then drew away, stalling off Bonny Song to win by a fength and a half. SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS. THE AUCKLAND MEETING. WORK AT ELLERSLIE. RED MANFRED AND FLOOD TIDE. In view of the Auckland spring meeting on Saturday and Monday, there was a good deal of fast work at Ellerslie this morning, when the semi-final gallops took place. The course proper, with the poles 401 : t out, was in most demand, the going being in good order. No. 3 grass, the sand, tan, hurdles and s-teeplechase were also open. Tile best efforts of the morning were those of Red Manfred, Flood Tide, Kelly and Karl. Course Proper. Roman Mascot was first out, and got to the end of a round in 2.20. She ran the last seven furlongs in 1.41 3-5, and was going comfortably throughout. Speedfast ran iiome from the seven-furlong peg I in 1.40 2-5, and Wee Pat finished up her ' work with six furlongs in 1.30. Kilonsoa impressed more than High Star at, the conclusion of six furlongs, which took 1.23, the first three being run in 39 3-ss. Flood Tide (Bartle) and Knight of Australia (Wiggins), with Mai de Mer to assist them over the last six furlongs, ran a mile and a quarter in 2.18. They covered the final round in 2.8, the last seven furlongs in 1.37 3-5, and the last six in 1.24 4-5. Flood Tide finished in front of Knight of Australia, and his effort will bring him into favour for the Mitchelson Cup. Gay Princess, Dialogue and Caliente finished in that order at the conclusion of six furlongs, which took 1.23 4-5, the first three being covered in 39 3-ss. Dialogue is coming to hand nicely. Carshalton, after taking 41 3-5s for his first three furlongs, registered 1.38 for seven.

Persian Lady was given an easy five furlongs, which occupied 1.13 1-5, and Morning Sun covered half a mile in 52 3-ss. Over the latter distance Tin Lap and Haputale recorded 525. There was little between them, though Tin Lap pleased most. After getting the worst of the start Salva finished several lengths in front of Backblock at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.7 3-5. This was a good effort for novices. Gay Broney and Jolly Dance ran the last three furlongs of their work in 41 3-ss. finishing on terms. Kelly (Gilchrist), after completing his first three furlongs in 38 3-ss, got to the end of six in 1.18 3-5. This was the best of the morning over the distance. There was little between Tooley Street and Tybalt after traversing six furlongs in 1.23 4-5. They could have done better. Jewelled Girdle was a shade in front of Valspear at the end of six furlongs in 1.21, the last half mile taking 53 l-ss. Gay Defence was not doing his best to traverse five furlongs in 1.9 3-5. The only gallop over a mile was that of Horowhenua and Royal Appellant, who were timed to traverse the distance in 1.45 2-5. They ran the last six furlongs in 1.20 and were together at the finish. Royal Appellant, who was on the outside, again did his work nicely. Little Man covered five furlongs in 1.9. After Breakfast. Red Manfred was allotted a mile and a quarter and ran the distance in 2.16 4-5, the last round taking 2.5 4-5. He covered the last seven furlongs in 1.33, and the final three in 41 2-ss. It was a first-class effort, and he was finishing on well. Bon Star reeled off half a mile in 52 3-ss, and was doing it nicely at the end. United took 1.38 4-5 for seven furlongs, the last half mile in 54 l-ss. The Great Northern Guineas candidates, Golden Blonde and Mandamus, were timed to run five furlongs in 1.6 1-5, the first two being covered in 25 3-ss. Golden Blonde finished a j couple of lengths in front, but Mandamus could have been closer. .
