WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

NEW LYNN. The monthly meeting of New Lynn Women's Institute was held yesterday. Various business took most of the time and later several members adjourned to town to hear Mrs. Watts, founder of the English Women's Institute, who is at present in Auckland, speak at the Auckland Centre. Community singing brought the gathering to a close. BIRKDALE. An interesting talk on tlje aims and activities of women's institutes was given to a large gathering of women in the Birkdale Public Hall by Mrs. Moller, vice-president of the federation. Work made by the members was displayed, and a demonstration on box covering was given by Mrs. Kent. Mrs. R. H. Greville presided. PONGAKAWA. The Pongakawa Valley Women's Institute held its third annual plain and fancy dress dance. The hall had been prettily decorated with greenery, balloons and streamers of orange and green, the institute colours. Mr. R. Joynt acted as master of ceremonies, and "the Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs. Turner. The prizes were awarded as follows: Special prize, Mrs. Denton and Miss R. Delves (Sir Peter and Lady Teazle); best lady, Mrs. Bromley (gipsy); best man, Mr. Hollis (absentminded professor); most original (ladies), Mrs. Fugle (letter box); gentleman's, Mr. E. Lowe (Herr Hitler).
