A.J.C. DERBY.
MALA UNLUCKY. NOT RIDDEN JUDICIOUSLY. SILVER RING'S SUPERIORITY. (Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Gold Rod jarred a front joint during the running of the A.J.C. Derby, and he is unlikely to start in the Melbourne Cup. Silver Jubilee broke down badly in the Epsom Handicap, and there is a doubt as to whether he will race again. The "Morning Herald,'"' commenting on the principal races on Saturday, says: "The Epsotn was one of the most eventtul in the long history of this important mila race. Gay Lover did not keep a straight course in the straight, 'veering out, apparently under pressure. Gay Lover and Capris then provided a great duel, whicn ended so unsatisfactorily. Capris is tue first mare to win the Epsom Handicap for 30 years. The Derby was marred by Shakespeare's fall, and by the change la tactics in the riding of Mala that left the impression that the colt's prospects had been prejudiced. Mala was not ridden with judgment, and the race was made for Talking. Mala had Gold Rod beaten a furlong and a half from the finish, but the effort took toll on his reserves, and he fell an easy prey to Talking's challenge. Ine Spring Stakes served to emphasise _ the superiority of the New Zealandei Silver Ring, and the prospects of any Sydney horses winning any weight-for-age races at this meeting are not bright."
