"IGURES TELL OWN STORY."

So says the Prime Minister, and so they would if lie used the correct figures. The actual facts, however, tell a different story from the one he tells. In stating that there were fewer votes cast against the Labour candidate 011 this occasion than were recorded against Mr. Jordan at the general election, he uses the preliminary eount for this year, 3830, and the final count of last year, 3963, whereas the figures are clearly not comparable. If he rejoices in the small opposing vote of 3830 this year, he should similarly take the preliminary count of 3098 last year, and come to the very opposite conclusion, an increase of 132 against him, instead of 133 in hisfavour. Therein is seen the writing on the wall, as against his incorrect interpretation of the figures. Similarly, the A'otes in his favour count against him, for they fell from S7SI to 8241, a reduction of 540. The totals' change, therefore, is recorded both ways, 132 plus 040, or 072, subject to the recount and the adjustment of postal and other votes, so it would be wise to await the final count before drawing any rash conclusions from incorrect comparisons. MANUKAU ELECTOR.
