MOVE FOR UNION.

UNDERTAKERS' EMPLOYEES. OBJECTION' BY OFFICIALS. No decision was reached at a meeting held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of considering a proposal to form a union of employees of funeral directors. The meeting .was attended by the organiser of the Auckland Drivers' Union, Mr. C. Lindsay, and the secretary of the Auckland Furniture and Related Trades Union, Mr. A. M. Dixon, who maintained that the workers were already provided for by their respective organisations. Mr, Dixon stated this morning that nine employers were present at the meeting, and one of them presided. The meeting lasted for about three-quarters of an hour, during which matters relating to the business of undertakers was discussed. It was suggested by the chairman that the proposal to form aunion should be discussed, but he and Mr. Lindsay objected to' this procedure, as they did not consider it fair to expect the men to discuss their affairs in the presence of the employers. The employers then intimated their willingness to retire, and they were then informed that it was futile for the men to discuss tlfce proposition, as they were already covered by the drivers' and furniture trades' awards.

The meeting* was also assured that if application were made for the registration of a separate union covering undertakers' assistants the two unions mentioned would object to registration on the grounds that there were other organisations to which they could belong. Finally the meeting closed without anv decision being reached.
