EXPANDING OUR EXPORTS.

A prominent London journalist now visiting the Dominion lias made encouraging comment on the prospects for New Zealand produce in the United Kingdom. Fortunately for s dairy farmers and the Government, the attitude of people at Home towards marketing schemes is very different from that of ten years' ago when New Zealand had its first experience of the consequences of export control of dairy products. The idea that trade should be entirely free from any suggestion of control was at that time deeply rooted; to-day the position is reversed. It is now an established principle that the Home farmer shall have first claim upon the market; that is one of the fruits of Ottawa. It is also a principle, though not yet completely established, that the Dominions shall have second place, and that Empire producers shall reap definite advantages in every branch of production because they are Empire producers. Empire preference is regarded to-day in the Dominions as a practical creed. So far as is possible these Dominions wish to develop and expand thentrade with Britain, but the limits must be recognised. Britain is to-day producing more butter and cheese than ever before Both Australia and New Zealand are increasing their production, and some leading foreign suppliers are doing their utmost to retain their foothold in Britain. In this position success must be sought by high quality and- uniformity of products. New Zealand has built up a reputation for the world's best lamb, and is the premier exporter of dairy produce.
