BUILDING WORK. VALUE OF CITY PERMITS. ACTIVITY WELL MAINTAINED. The recovery which has taken place in the building industry in Auckland is reflected by the fact that since the beginning of the present year permits to the value of over half a million pounds have been issued by the City Council for buildings of various descriptions, whereas the value of the permits issued for the corresponding period of last year was only £281,512. The position was slightly better in 1934, when the council approved of work costing £294,330. Last month building activity was well maintained, the total value of permits issued being £73,557. The figure, while not an improvement on those for several other months, is appreciably higher than those of February, March and May. The best month so far this year was June, when permits issued were valued at £90,015. The August figure is more than £30,000 alcove that for August last year, and is over four times the figure of £10,528 for the corresponding month in 1934. » Permits issued last month aggregated (154, of which 32 were with resject to the erection of ne\v dwellings. The principal buildings for which permits were issued are two blocks of flats, one in the city and the other in Ponsonby. The permits for new houses were four short of those issued in July. So far this year the permits for house building total'2oo, against 157 for the corresponding months last year, and 94 in the January-August period in 1934.
