SPEEDING CARS.
MAGISTRATE'S DECISION. TO SUPPORT" GOVERNMENT. In the Magistrate's Court at Otahuhu ; yesterday Mr. Hunt, S.M., dealt with , the first batch of offenders under the new statute limiting speed to 30 m.p.h. in populous areas. , "We have made up our mind to supL port the statute," said Mr. Hunt, "and • it is our duty to support the Government in this effort to stop speeding. All are made to suffer through the fault of the careless ones." Mr. Hunt added that this was a statute, not a by-law. He said that he considered that the road through Otahuhu was probably the busiest area for traffic outside a city i in New Zealand. People would have 1 to learn that from bridge to bridge in J Otahuhu they could not exceed 30 m.p.h. : Inspector Breed agreed with Mr. Hunt ; that the road through Otahuhu was the ' busiest road in New Zealand. He stated ; that warning notices had been erected . and red flags were placed on them to | draw the motorists' attention. He said that it was the intention to erect these ! notices' wherever the statute applied. ' Except for the portion from Penrose to , Portage- Road and a strip of about a 1 mile between the boundaries of Otahuhu and Papatoetoe, the speed limit was 30 m.p.h. right out to Papakura. Mr. Holmden, in asking the magistrate to make a warning in these cases, 1 mentioned that the biggest local body in the province was writing to first' offenders under the Act who had not exceeded 30 m.p.h.. pointing out that 30 m.p.h. was the limit, and another offence would mean prosecution. Mr. Hunt said that it seemed 1 useless fining people small amounts these days, as lie had been informed that hardly a day passed without the police in this ' district being called out to an accident. He would treat them alike, and in each - case inflict a fine of £2j plus costs.
