CHURCH ANNIVERSARY
ST. ANDREW'S, CAMBRIDGE. CONSECRATED IX 1881. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, Monday. Special services of commemoration were held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church yesterday to mark the fifty-fifth anniversary of the consecimtion of the eliureh 011 August 31, ISSI.
The first clyjrch, the old parish hall which still stands at the rear of the existing church, was built in 1873. The existing vicarage, 011 an adjoining section" was erected 111 1877, and in 1881 the present church was erected at a cost of £1500 and furnished at a cost of £2205. It was consecrated by Bishop Cowie. The church has a peal of six bells weighing 30cwt which cost £300. Of this sum £200 was given by Mr. E. Hewitt. The church is a typical old English one* with its spire and bells, and within its walls are a number of memorials to former parishioners who have passed on.
St. Andrew's has had five vicars, namely the Rev. William Newcombe de Laval Willis, IS7B to 1012; Rev. C. Mortimer-Jones, 191*2 (absent 011 active service); Rev. E. Lionel Harvie, 1927-20; Rev. G. Gordon Bell, and the present vicar, the Rev. C. W. Chandler.
There were large attendances at the special services despite' the wet weather. This morning the Rev. J. M. Beaufort and the vicar officiated. The Rev. C. Mortimer-Jones, of Hastings, and the Very Rev. Dean Weatherhog, of Hamilton, also conducted services.
