TO COST £6700.
BATHS IMPROVEMENTS.
PROPOSAL BY THE MAYOR.
There is every prospect that tlie City Council will receive authority to raise, by way of special order, the sum of £0700 for the installation of filtration and chlorination plants at the Hobson Street, Parnell and Shelly Beach Baths, according to a statement made by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, in a report to the City Council last night.
"It will be recalled that, following representations made to me by the Medical Officer of Health, the city engineer reported that it would be necessary to embark on considerable expenditure for purification and filtration purposes, and the council resolved that the amount required would be added to the next loan proposals submitted to the ratepayers."
As it was not contemplated that loan polls would be taken in the near future, and in view of the absolute necessity for an immediate improvement in baths conditions, 3fr. Davis brought the question to the notice of the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, and suggested to him that tlie council be authorised to raise the sum by way of special order. At the instance of the Minister, the town clerk and the city engineer conferred with the Secretary to the Treasury and the DirectorGeneral of Health, both of whom regarded the proposal with favour.
The Mayor recommenced that, upon receipt of notification from the local medical officer of health, application be made to the Board of Health for authority to effect the improvements in the manner indicated.
Further consideration is to be given to the proposal, and the matter was referred to the parks committee.
