LIKE A SHELL.
VIOLENT EXPLOSION.
LIGHTNING STRIKES HOUSE.
MAN RENDERED SENSELESS,
(By Telegraph.'—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. A startling incident occurred at the residence of Mr. W. Wlially during a thunderstorm at Otaki. Mr. Whally was sitting half asleep in an armchair listening to the wireless when a violent thunderstorm occurred, rousing Mr. Whally, who stood up with the intention of switching off the set. Before he could do so, however, a violent explosion took place, completely wrecking the set, smashing a window and putting the telephone out of order. The other occupants of the house were completely overcome and Mr. Whally was rendered unconscious for a time. When the family had recovered from their terrifying ordeal they were able to see the damage which had been done. All felt that they were extremely lucky that the results had not been more serious. In describing the occurrence Mr. Whally said the report was like the explosion of a shell in the war. He is still unable to hear properly, but hopes in the course of a few days to be able to resume his duties.
