BIG PROJECT.
TUNNEL UNDER RIVER. Costly Plan to Relieve London Traffic. OVER £3,000,000 SCHEME. British Official Wireless. (Received 0.30 a.m.) RUGBY, August 16. Construction of the Dartford-Purfleet tunnel to provide a link between the north and south sides of the Thames Estuary is to be begun within the next few weeks. The cost of the whole system is estimated at about £3,200,000. As a first step it is proposed to construct a pilot tunnel' abput 900 yds long with an internal diameter of 12ft, also shield chambers and certain other 1 ancillary works in connection with the main tunnel, vThe pilot tunnel and the ancillary work will cost about £300,000. It will provide information as to. the ! strata under the river at 'this point, | as well as on other matters which will | be helpful ill connection with the coni struction of the main tunnel which will be rather more than a mile in length. | At present there is no facility for ! crossing the Thames by means of a . bridge or a tunnel below Blackwall tunnel, which is three miles from the | mouth of the estuary and 12 miles from j the site of the proposed tunnel.
