30 M.P.H. LIMIT.
CYCLIST FINED. FIRST CASE UNDER ACT. LIABLE TO IMPRISONMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association'.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Described as the first case brought in New Zealand under the new Motor Vehicles Act, a motor cyclist was fined £3 and costs in the Magistrate's Court to-day for exceeding 30 m.p.h. within the city. It was pointed out that offenders are liable to a fine of £100 or three months' gaol. NO LOCAL CASES PENDING. COPY OF ACT AWAITED. "This is certainly the first case under the new Motor Vehicles Act that I have heard of," • said Mr. C. Bland, traffic superintendent of the Auckland City Council, when the Christchurch message was referred to him. "We have no prosecutions pending under the new legislation," he added. "We are still carrying on with the 'dangerous driving' charge against motorists and motor cyclists who go too last. It would be unfair, in our opinion, to commence prosecuting so soon, because actually we have not yet received a copy or the Act as it was passed. We have a copy of the bill, but it may have suffered amendments during its passage through the House. As soon as we have a copy of the Act we will, of course, enforce it. It is already law, and motorists and motor cyclists can be prosecuted for breaches of it, but we wish to know exactly what the Act requires! before we take action."
