STRAIN ON BRIDGES.
USEFUL BRITISH TESTS. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, August 14. In order to gain data oil the weightcarrying capacity of certain types of bridges, which have been standing for many years, selected bridges scheduled for demolition are being deliberately broken by overloading. The experiments arc being made in the presence of officials of the Ministry of Transport and experts from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and of the Building Research Station. The first experiment took place yesterday near Derby, and others will follow in Birmingham and Essex. An ingenious mechanism has been devised for recording the gradual distortion of the bridges under strain up to the breaking point.
