LAST PIPE LAID.
DRAINAGE IN MOUNT EDEN
END OF BIG SCHEME
At noon yesterday the last pipe to complete Mount Eden's big drainage scheme, which was put in hand many years ago, was lowered into a rock-bottom trench in Landscape Road by Mr. E. H. Potter, ex-Mayor of the borough. The present Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. T. McNab, together with Messrs. S. E. Chappell, A. C. Johns, K. N. Buttle,' J. H. Beale, A. T. Dow and C. Cowah, members of the council, and Mr. Potter, gathered round the manhole down which the pipe was lowered. Mr. McNab said he was pleased that Mr. Potter was able to be present, as the drainage scheme had been commenced during his term of office. Mr. Potter said he was delighted to be present at the conclusion of the largest and most difficult drainage scheme ever carried out in New Zealand. The difficulties had been due to the fact that the drainage had to be carried through a lava bed. When the scheme had been first' contemplated it had' been generally considered impossible to sewer the district, but with the use of the power drill the first portion had been commenced. The drainage of the southern area of the borough had been the most difficult part of the work, but this had been completed at a much less cost than estimated. He expressed the opinion that the finished scheme would "make" Mount Eden, and also would very considerably reduce the hospital levy. Mr. McNab then asked Mr. Potter to lower the last pipe.
