ADDINGTON TROTS.

AUGUST MEETING. THE OPENING DAY. ! FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Ste.r.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will open its August-meeting at Addington to-morrow, marking the start of a new racing season. The course, which was out of action for about a fortnight, as a result of rain and snow, ha< recovered wonderfully in the last few days, and it should be in great order for the first day, with a prospect of being fast, provided the present favourable weather continues. Strong fields should provide some excellent sport, though some of the horses may be a trifle backward after having their work stopped on account of the wet spell. The ex-Auckland mare Bessie Parrish is down to contest the Stewards' Handicap at Addington, and she would only have to make a reasonably good beginning to play a prominent part. She has previously run some fine races in the south, but has worked herself back to a hard mark, from which her opportunities are restricted. Bessie Parrish a couple of seasons ago was trained by J. T. Paul at Mangere, and she won several races for this popular mentor. SHOULD GO WELL. 'Reports from Wellington credit Bonny Azure with having gone on the right way since joining L. O. Thomas' stable, and she'ean be expected to run a good race in the Queen ;Mary Handicap at Addington to-morrow. Last season Bonny Azure won ten races, and her form' was excellent, but she wag not seen at her best when she act,ed as runner-up in both sprint races at the Auckland winter meeting. A daughter of Blue Mountain King and Bonnie Bingen;,' and granddaughter of Great Bingen, Bonny Azure has all the family speed, and she will disappoint if she fails to win a race at the southern fixture.

BINGEN PALM'S CHANCES. * Bingen Palm has not always raced up to his best form, and his latest efforts have not been satisfactory. At his best, however, he is a really good pacer, and a good . spell from the race track lias benefited him. In the Queen Mary Handicap at Addington he is well placed, and in the event of a heavy track he will more than hold his own.

WEATHER AFFECTS TRACKS. Owing to an enforced spell of just on ten days owing to unpleasant weather conditions in the south, there is a likelihood of several of the pacers and trotters facing at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting, which opens to-morrow, being a trifle short of work. The last couple of days have been better, but even so the absence of really fast work may have a detrimental effect.

DOES NOT APPEAL. Kewpie's Triumph is the sole representative of Auckland in the International Handicap, the principal sprint event at Addington to-morrow, but the bay horse would have to show big improvement to race prominently. One thing in his favour is that he is particularly partial to heavy going. Kewpie's Triumph has rarely run a bad race in Auckland during the last couple of seasons, but the class has not been good.

A USEFUL SORT. When raced in Auckland early last season Kuini showed fair ability in her races, but was not outstanding. Her last success was gained at the Auckland Christmas meeting, when she scored over two miles. She has been in the south for some time, but, although she has raced fairly well, has recorded nothing of a high-class nature. Kuini claims an engagement in the Introductory Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting at Addington to-morrow, but will have to improve to hold her own in this class.

A PROMISING NOVICE. Musketeer, who is to have his first race in the First Maiden Handicap at the Cambridge meeting next week, is a three-year-old gelding by Jewel Pointer from Harvest Home and is thus a full-brother to Great Jewel, Musketeer, has been showing'.outstanding promise in his training efforts at Epsom, a feature of his work being- the fine way he has battled on when under pressure. Although he may not win at Cambridge, the novice is sure to derive a good deal of benefit from the outing, and he can confidently be. ticked off as an early winner in the new season.

SPEEDY, BUT UNRELIABLE. The Australian-bred pacer Star Pronto is getting through his tasks at Epsom in a satisfactory manner, and the black gelding has taken no ill-effects from the two hard races- lie had at Auckland in June. When .he won the June Handicap on the second day Star Pronto was responsible for a truly wonderful performance. In all probability Star Pronto will be taken to Cambridge next ,week to compete in the Militia Handicap, in which he figures off 24yds. The son of Don Pronto would'have prospects second to none if he could be relied upon to leave the mark properly, but there is always a doubt about him, and his chances may depend upon his ability to begin correctly. ' ' ,

MAY SURPRISE. When raced at the Auckland winter meeting Native Princess displayed signs of early improvement by finishing a close fourth to Bingen Sun in the Winter Handicap, the slow-class trotting event on the opening day. She was in one of the leading positions practically all the way, and it was only in the last furlong that she faded a little. It was Native Princess', first race for some time, and she should improve on that effort. She is down to compete in both the Duke Street and Te Koutu. Park Handicaps at' Cambridge next week, and although she may not figure among the well-backed division she' is a likely sort to effect a surprise.

A SPEEDY FAMILY. Quite Sure, the free-legged pacing stallion by Peter Volo from Etawah Girl, who will arrive in New Zealand shortly, has a smart young sister named Europa in America. Though the season was still in its early stages, the two-year-old on June--12 trotted a mile in 2.10, the-first half of which took 1.6%. Quite Sure has a record 'of 2.1% as a three-year-old. Peter Volo, the 2.2 trotting sire of Quite Sure and Europa, is also the sire of Princess Marina, who trotted to 2.8% on the same day. The latter is the fifth 2.10 two-year-old trotter produced by Margaret Arion (2.10%), and in this respect the great brood mare holds the honours.

PARTIAL TO SOFT TRACKS. With few exceptions horses bred in Southland can handle soft tracks and under wintry conditions they usually hold their own. A number of them have been entered for the Addington meeting, which opens to-morrow. ' Among them are Gold Tinge, Grand Mogul, Willow Wave, Sunny Morn, Blue Mountain Queen, Sterling Lady, Kibo, Eighteen Carat, Fairhaven, Happy Knight, Big Author, Southern Smile, Teviot Downs, Rocks Ahead, Young Frank, Mocast, Blue Mountain and. Sure. "Of the horses named Sure is the best in the mud, and while it is a big claim, many affirm that she can go rnearly as fast in mud as she can on firm ground. Gold Tinge, Sterling Lady, Rocks Ahead, Southern Smile, Teviot Downs and Happy Knight revel in heavy ground, but Willow Wave is above the average under these conditions over a journey. Should the course be holding to-morrow Willow Wave will have numerous friends for the August Handicap.
