BOXING.

WAIHI ASSOCIATION.

DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED.

Important questions affecting the sport were raised at the annual meeting of the Waihi Boxing Association, when it was disclosed that there was much difficulty in procuring a suitable hall, it being alleged that something in the nature of a monopoly existed at the present time, and that it was found impossible to secure seats which hitherto had been available. Mr. G. Wilkins said there was a strong feeling in the town regarding the matter, and that the time had come when the question of a town?hall should be considered. He suggested that a sub-committee should bej appointed to wait upon the Waihi Borough! Council in the matter. \ The president, Mr. J. F. Robertson, replied that the question would be brought before the council in due course. ' - 1 The meeting decided in the meantime to endeavour to procure the drill shed for the next tournament. In regard to professional contests, it was considered that the tei'ms asked by boxers were rather prohibitive in respect to the smaller towns. It was reported that some 22 lads were in training at Waikiiio, and it was arranged that representatives of the association would visit their training quarters last evening. The opinion was expressed that an amateur tournament would prove a great success. The report and statement of accounts were presented -by the 1 secretary, Mr. H. L. Boughton, and showed that the finances were ,in a satisfactory condition, and that the , Mudgway-Oxley" contest had proved a success in every way: Officers elected:—Patron, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt; president, Mr. J. F. Robertson; vice-president, Mr. F. R. Slevin; committee, Messrs. E. Pringle, G. B. Richardson, G. Wilkins, J. Wyatt, J. Waite, I. G. Leopold, T. R. Birdsall, J. C. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Great boxing and thrilling fighting is promised in the three nights' tournament which will decide this year's Auckland provincial amateur championships. This sporting event will take place at the Town Hall on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and each night patrons will see about four hours of first-class entertainment. Every year the annual championships produce bright boxing, and have become recognised as the most popular indoor sporting event of the year, an entertainment which it would be practically impossible to excel. Another fine entry has been received this year, and for the number of boxers who will be engaged, as well as in the quality of the fighting which'will be seen,. Auckland retains its iplace as the most productive of all championship centres. Every one of the three nights will be packed with action and patrons will be well ' rewarded for their attendance, whether they arrive at the start or at a later hour, as it is quite likely, in view of the fact that about 70 fights have to be staged, the tournament will continue until' nearly midnight on the first night and perhaps on the second evening as well. . .
