GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
PROPOSAL FOR WIDENING. ONE TREE HILL PLANS. The widening of the Great South. Road from Campbell Road to the Penrose bridge was decided upon by the One Tree Hill Borough Council at its meeting last evening. Reporting on the inspection by councillors on July 20, the town clerk, Mr. A. Leese, said that the alignment of telegraph and power poles on that section of the road was not in agreement with the existing or the proposed new kenb lines, but measurements indicated that it would be quite practicable to ignore the poles entirely when planning the proposed work. None of them stood more than ten feet out from the road line and would not be a serious obstruction to pedestrians. As their life was limited, their position would eventually be rectified at no cost to the council when replacements became necessary.
The council decided that the carriageway, at present 20 feet wide, should be widened to 40 feet, leaving two footpaths of ten 'feet each; that concrete be laid between the existing concrete and road line, which would not require moving. between Green Park Road and the bridge, making a uniform width of 40 feet throughout; and that an engineer be appointed by the works supervision committee and the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, to report on the alternative use of concrete or bitumen.
