A MEW COALMINE.
A company lias recently undertaken the mining of lignite coal deposits between the north and south branches of the Waihao River, near Waimate. The existence of the deposits has been known for many years, but previous attempts to extract the coal have been hampered by water. The new mine is at an elevation that allows this disability to be overcome. Government estimates of the deposit place the available coal at 2,500,000 tons. It-' is of good quality and is reported to contaln a high percentage of petroleum oil.
