RAILWAY OFFICERS.

THIRD ANNUAL BALL,

UNIQUE AND NOVEL DECORATIONS,

The third annual ball of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute was held at the Petei Pan Cabaret last evening and was decidedly one of the largest and most successful entertainments of this season. From the foyer to the end of the hall were extremely clever and appropriate decorations. At the entrance was a standard crossing signal, flashing its red and green lights for the guests to enter, while in the hall at each corner of the dance floor were three-position signal lights, alternating green, red and orange, the eifect throwing a delightful colour effect over the dresses. Round the orchestral dais was a cleverly designed train, a f drawn model of the latest K class locomotive. Inside the lighted train were silhouettes of seated passengers, luggage and guard, and the small engine attached gave a realistic touch by puffing very loudly. Another realistic decoration was the model of a train, which had a background of moving scenery, showing the beauty spots of New Zealand. Over the dancers was a gay canopy of red and green ribbons. The supper room was another feast of colour, while the tables were daintily arranged with Iceland poppies and irises. The ball committee comprised Messrs. E. W. Burncs, C. Burnes, W. R. Butcher, L. R. Dale, A. Brown, A. F. Fitzpatrick, J. P. C. Enevoldson, G. S. J. Read, C. D. Birclifield, A. E. Chapman, A. R. Stowell and C. H. Bray. The guests were received by Mr. C. E.
