UNUSUAL POSITION.
ROAD BOARD BY-ELECTION
RAT lis MUST BE PAID,
Jn connection with the election of one member to the Mount Roskill Road Board, to be held, on August 21, an unusual position —and an important one to ratepayers of the district —has arisen. Ratepayers who are in arrears with their rates, and even those who have not paid their current rates, will not be eligible to vote. In 1934 legislation was passed which suspended the penal clause which restricted the voting at local elections to ratepayers who had paid all rates due, and because of the suspension all ratepayers, whether in arrears or not, were enabled to vote at the 1934 and 1935 local body elections.
That section of the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act ceased on March 31 last, and the position now is that the provisions of the Koad Boards Act, 1908, again apply. Kates are dtie on demand, and as demand notices were sent ont a month ago to ratepayers in the Mount Roskill district only those ratepayers who have paid all rates, including those for the current year, 1036-37, will be eligible to vote at the election on August. 21. Water charges are held to be rate 3 for the purposes of this election. >
