MOUNT EDEN RATES.
At the last valuation I was assessed at £64 as the rent of four rooms above a shop I own. The shop is assessed separately. Unfortunately I am a bit deaf and did not realise my case was on until it was finished, but immediately after I protested, and was curtly informed that I could not speak, as judgment had been given. One roo:-i only was let and was fetching an average of about 7/ per week. The other two were empty and had been empty for over a year. Two of them have been empty for eight years, yet I am forced to pay nearly £14 a year in rates. I wrote to the council offering the rooms for £20 a year, but it wisely refused. Now the council is on the warpath again with its high valuations and still higher water rates, and again the Council Chambers will be packed with vainly protesting poor property owners. I suggest that before the court sits the council should put "Abandon hope, all ve who enter here" above the door. AB UNO DISCE OMXES.
